The Ripple Effect

Earth. Air. Fire. Water. And now, Parlour’s fifth element: Art. The Art of the photograph, the Art of the human body, and the Art of the collaborative creation. Parlour joins forces with Kirby Feng and his innovative team to bring you an underwater photo spread of epic proportions. Inspiring photographs with purpose, and at the heart of this narrative, a love story— of childhood memories, growth, and community.

As City Council tries to close Scona Pool for the second time in the last year, Feng embarks on a heroic journey to save this 52-year-old facility through reaction, rebuttal, and an impassioned group of lobbyists. Providing a safe haven in his high school years, and life-altering experiences as a volunteer swim coach over the last 13 years, Scona Pool holds great meaning for Feng. Putting the pool on the chopping block, City Council looks forward to closing costly communal amenities in favour of erecting legacy buildings— larger, multiuse facilities that simultaneously cater to a wider demographic and uproot staple community resources.

Now, in a powerful partnership between local artists, designers, and Parlour, Feng creates a legacy through art. With six elite athletes modelling exquisite jewellery and dress by some of our favourite local designers, photographed by world-renowned photographer Tri-Kiet Vuong, and edited by Clayton Didier, we’ve captured the essence of Scona Pool’s bearings and materialized the beauty these dedicated swimmers find in their medium, the water, everyday.

All photos were taken along Calgary’s beautiful Bow River, which has earned a reputation of being one of the top three rivers to fish in the world. Parlour spent the day in and out of this flowing body of water, side by side the large rainbow trout that inhabit it, and under the graceful shade of the Bow River valley canopy.

Introduction to Photography Workshops

The Introduction to Photography Workshops are designed to give new photographers a strong foundation in photography by covering the essential fundamentals of photographic image creation. The following three workshops complete this series:

A. Introduction to the Camera Workshop

Prerequisite: No prerequisite required

Focusing on the relationship between camera, lens and photographer, participants will discuss camera settings and operations, the function and relationship of shutter speed and aperture, contrasts and similarities of digital and analog theories, the function of the ISO, effective exposure, and finally, the significance of the Histogram.

B. Lighting and Composition Workshop

Prerequisite: Introduction to the Camera Workshop or permission from Instructor

This workshop focuses on the application of lighting and composition theories to create stronger and more dynamic images. Participants cover natural and artificial lighting, light temperature, white balance, light ratio, and the fundamentals of image composition and point-of-view.

C. Image Processing Workshop

Prerequisite: Lighting and Composition Workshop or permission from Instructor

Ensuring your images reach their full potential, this workshop explores the world of post-production. Similar to analog photography, digital negatives require processing, colour correction, and level adjustment before they are presentable. A basic digital processing study will help sharpen, smoothen, and adjust light ratios, which is essential to the presentation of your images.

Workshops run Friday evening through to Sunday evening and are structured as follows:

Friday: Instructors will provide participants with the workshop introduction, theory instruction, and assignment introduction in a classroom environment.
Saturday: The morning consists of a brief review session and question & answer period. Participants will then work independently on their assignments; instructors will be available throughout the day to assist and guide participants through their assignments.
Sunday: There is no scheduled programming in the morning, but participants are advised to shoot and select images for their shooting assignments during this time. In the afternoon, Instructors will be available for any last minute questions or one-on-one critiques. To conclude the workshop, each participant will submit his or her images for group critique and discussion.

We slept lazy, hazy, mid-afternoon,

After bike rides and baskets,

And sunny salt kisses,

A ladybug soft on your skin.

We lay in the brush,

By the water, near the creek,

On the moss, the lilac smelled sweet.

Come dusk, at twilight,

Your sky turned electric,

Candles made wet windows feel warm.

And with silk and lace dresses,

And tanned, freckled noses,

We were reckless in the dark, tepid breeze.

We crawled into bed,

Exhausted, carefree,

So uncluttered, our breathing serene.

The morning was delicate,

The sun tiptoed in,

Where my tousled, white bed sheets touched dreams.

In spontaneous decision

I’ll tell all my secrets;

I’ll love you forever,

And may die when you leave.

This is no small, trite fling,

This is a sneek peak and the new and improved Thread hill and Propoganda campaign. The companies hired me for a series of 5 - 10 illustrations featuring their hair and clothing.

This has been an exciting few months, and myself and the creative agency (Deva Creative) are preparing to bombard you with images, illustrations and designs from the last several months....

Parlour will be out in the next few weeks, and as the photo editor for the magazine, i must say that i am so proud of the standard we are taking in the photos of the magazine. We have expanded from basically one photographer, to over 15 working on the team at once, the best community i have had the privilege to direct and work with, and it will only get better.

This 10 page spread was the highlight of my Summer. With the dynamic team at Parlour Magazine, i created this pastiche; Alice in Wonderland meets Sin City.

The theme of the story is loss of innocence, a topic dear to myself, and a theme i often work with.

Special thanks to Shelly Solarz and PETEY!!!, without them and the efforts of a small army, this production would not have reached the success it has!

In Playing with Fire, Theo Fleury takes us behind the bench during his glorious days as an NHL player and talks about growing up devastatingly poor and in chaos at home. Dark personal issues haunted him, with drinking, drugs, gambling and girls ultimately derailing his Hall of Fame–calibre career
